Best Part Of Being Away.....Is Coming Home!!

We enjoyed a lovely weekend with extended family in Nova Scotia...attending the wedding on Saturday.  Traffic from here to Nova Scotia.....was insane!  The busiest we have ever seen it....lots of vehicles with Ontario & Quebec plates......both there and here!

On Monday, we visited a few small towns along the way to Lunenburg....Chester, Mahone Bay, and then on to Bridgeport.   We stayed in Lunenburg for one night....it is a tourist town....it was so busy we had to walk single file on the sidewalks!  And hilly....wow!  The clerk at our hotel advised in the winter....walking & driving is treacherous in the town due to ice and snow!

I was disappointed in the amount of shopping available at any of our stops!   Mostly restaurants, pubs & bars....I was expecting shops with local wares!  But very little.....one over priced clothing store in Lunenburg....another sold leather purses (from Nepal).

What I loved about Lunenburg was the very old, colourful homes!  If it wasn't so hilly (and a bum knee...still) ...I would have loved to walk about & take more photos....not the same trying to get photos from a vehicle.  Most homes, along the walk by our motel....were painted in gorgeous, vibrant colours...(right up my alley)....some had plaques advising they were private residences.....such as this one....

I love the combination of colours used....

The unique shape of this home.....and the colour....a real eye catcher.....

This is one show stopper away from the downtown core....this is what most of the homes were like....big, bold & beautiful!  Not like here....where slum lords take over majestic homes & turn them into apartments.....

Each property was colourful & wonderfully maintained!  The motel clerk advised at Christmas....everything is lit beautifully.....wouldn't that be wonderful to see? There is also a walking tour available....if it wasn't so hilly....wish we could taken it & learned the history of the town & homes....

Looking across the harbour.....the weather was very hot there as well.....but zillions of tourists milling about....just look at that blue sky!!!

As mentioned, I did very little shopping but was content to take in the sights!  I did manage to pick up some bath & shower items when we stopped in Windsor for breakfast, on our way home....

All made from natural ingredients by the owner of the shop....bath bombs, cute duck soap and "bath play dough" for grand daughter.....shower steams & a Stanley cup key chain/lip balm container for daughter here....

There was a little train station (from days gone by).....(always hold a special place in my heart)....I was born & raised in a "railroad village"......my Dad was a train engineer & I spent a great part of my life in the engine with him or at our local, very large train station.....you can read all about it here....https://mcadamstation.ca/?srsltid=AfmBOop8gTPfP0Q4H5TmZWxXj3ZkSEBg42_bcAUhJ0j1hLAysWmu0X2p

This caboose is undergoing restoration....the sign explains the details a bit....

I recognized this baggage cart....we used to sit on them in my teens....after hamburgers & fries at the station diner....

Many a railway crossing had a couple of these to warn of oncoming trains....

I wish I had more photos to share.....but mostly we enjoyed time with family....Mr. Seventies niece & husband were there from Calgary....and nephew, wife & toddler were close by!

As the title reveals.....it's good to be home!   I'm not a traveller....Mr. Seventies used to say he would take me anywhere....as long as we could be there & back.....in three days!   So true!  I'm a home body.....I love being surrounded with my things & people in my home.....and my own bed!

We are still enjoying a heat wave here.....today will be another hot one!  We are in desperate need of rain...keeping fingers crossed no fires break out.  There is a burn ban across the province....fires burning in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia currently.  With all the fallen debris from Hurricane Fiona.....we are a tinderbox waiting to happen.....

Thanks so much for spending time with me today....have an awesome weekend!

Til next time....

  1. Lovely old homes. My last 10 years of employment were working with the railroads keeping track of our train locations and maintenance. Interesting job, as no two days were the same! RHill, TX
