Mr. Seventies & I...with Liesel in tow decided since it was a beautiful, sunny warm day to take a short road trip to the town of Montague. Montague is a cute little town with a population of about 2,500 east of Charlottetown....about a 40-45 minute drive.
Don't let the small size fool you...as it is one busy spot...with two major grocery outlets, fast food restaurants...along with quaint little restaurants and a favourite of Mr. Seventies...Bog Side Brewery (and restaurant). We found out later...dogs are very much welcome at Bog Side!! The town consists of gorgeous, tree lined streets with beautiful heritage houses...schools, hardware stores...and one of my favourite furniture stores...Stewart & Beck (they sell a vast supply of Canadian made furniture)....
A river runs through the town....can you see the hanging baskets on the side of the bridge?
This beautiful heritage building is now a museum....we would have enjoyed browsing through it...but will save that for another day.....sans Liesel....
Many beautiful boats docked in the harbour...with a lovely boardwalk and benches to sit on & enjoy the cool breeze off the water...
I took the opportunity to browse through a local artisan gift shop....while Mr. Seventies & Liesel found a shaded spot under a tree nearby. While walking to the shop....I passed this building boaters use...love how it is painted to resemble quilts!
Up a small flight of stairs...you are welcomed in to the shop....
And what beautiful treasures I viewed inside! All done by local artisans...
This soap smells amazing...and I love the little bath scrubbies available as well!
These hand stitched quilts were heart stopping! Are they not simply stunning? Very expensive...but worth every cent! Ny favourite is the top (or bottom) one hanging in the centre....
And this awesome carved fisherman was on hand to welcome you! I love how weathered and worn he is...standing for many years in all sorts of weather...
There is a lovely shop...Second Glance located in a small strip mall....I needed to check out! We used to have a location in Charlottetown...I visited it frequently on my lunch hour - when I worked in the downtown. It's a beautiful bedding and home decor store...unfortunately I wasn't able to take many photos...as I spent most of my visit chatting with the Lisa....the lovely owner! I told her I would be back when I had more time to shop...it was getting close to lunch time....and I knew Mr. Seventies would want to enjoy our picnic lunch in the shade!
This was the cutest, little mall....ever! I counted three hair salons! Three! And all busy as could be! At one end....was a thrift store! I had fun poking around in it...and the prices were a steal! And a couple of the most adorable wall murals....love the lobsters! Little ones can stick their head in the hole...and have photos taken....
This was by far my favourite mural! And notice the sunflower to the left...also a chance to poke your head though and have a photo op! My cousin Bill, who lives in New Brunswick has a truck just like this.
Wouldn't you love to have the talent to paint such beautiful murals? I know I would...I just love them...
There was so much more to see in Montague...the town is the hub for the eastern end of the Island...numerous people in town for the day...shopping for supplies, eating local fare...and I noticed picking up back to school supplies. I didn't have the chance to visit Belle's Dress Shop....a beautiful women's clothing store...Liesel only has so much patience for her Mama. She had a great time walking about...checking out the sights, smells and sounds. She enjoyed a snack and cold drinks while we snacked on sandwiches & fruit....
I'll share a fond memory of one trip to Montague with my best friend Chris...before she passed away so suddenly. We took a drive one sunny afternoon...as I was on the hunt for slip covered furniture...and knew Stewart & Beck furniture store carried it.
When we arrived...unbeknownst to us...the town was celebrating "Montague Days"....and we ended up following along behind the parade! We chuckled - had we'd known they were having a parade for us...we'd have arrived earlier! I miss you still Chris...wishing you were here to meet your first grand-baby...born a few days ago. I know you are smiling in heaven!
Thanks for coming along on our day trip & spending some time with me today! We don't venture down east too often...but always enjoy the drive and checking out the various stores and activities. The place was buzzing with tourists from everywhere!
Til next time....
Oh, this looks like such a fun trip Charlotte! So many cute little shops and its so cool that the merchandise is locally made. The quilts are lovely - I'd have a hard time picking a favorite. I'm sorry about your friend Chris, but what a touching story. Hope you are enjoying summer over there and take care my friend!
ReplyDeleteHi Kim - good to hear from you! Thank you for your sweet condolences...I miss my bestie every day. Her death was very sudden...we spent a great deal of time together. Hoping your summer is going well on your side of the country!! We'll be into fall before we know it!
ReplyDeleteLove those quilts and the side of the building painted like quilts. I saw your post at a link party, I host parties too and invite you to drop by and link up with me. If your post is appropriate for my multiple parties, feel free to link up at all of them :)
ReplyDeleteThis looks lovely! I really like the bedding set up, it's so cute! It's funny, I have a town near me named Montague, and the population is also about 2,500. It's a small little town that has a river running through it, and is nested on an inland lake of the great lakes. It sounds like it has very similar attributes. It's my hometown, and I wouldn't trade it for the world. :) Thank you for visiting Tell It To Me Tuesday!
ReplyDeleteHow awesome that there are two little towns named Montague! And they sound so similar!! Quite a coincidence...what a lovely home town to have grown up in! Thank you for inviting me to Tell It To Me Tuesday!!
